PETA Receives Landmark 10,000th Donated Fur Coat

Fashion-conscious and compassionate people wouldn't be caught dead in fur these days. Over the years, PETA has received thousands of coats—made from every animal under the sun, from exotic leopards to opossums, and even a coat made of minks' paws and another one from monkey fur. They all come from people who have been sickened by exposés of cruelty to animals caught in leghold traps and driven mad in tiny fur farm cages or decided they don't want to suffer the humiliation of being confronted, yet again, by someone haranguing them for their insensitivity. PETA uses the donated furs in library displays, anti-fur fashion shows, street theater, and other educational events designed to convince consumers that animals should never be fashion victims. We have given some furs a proper burial and cremated others. We even give furs to the homeless and use them as animal bedding for orphaned wildlife.

This month, we received our 10,000th fur coat donation in a batch of four separate donations of fur that came through our door at the same time. In addition to a tax deduction for the donation, four generous and animal-friendly women also received a letter from Bea Arthur and a call from Rue McClanahan. The two Golden Girls thanked the donors for their generosity and congratulated them on donating their coats.

PETA has found another use for these donated furs—giving them away to the homeless. We can't bring the animals used to make fur coats back, but we can send a strong message that only people truly struggling to survive the elements have any excuse for wearing fur.
