Designer John Galliano Lampooned in Anti-Fur Ad

PETA has had no luck in its attempts to convince John Galliano to stop designing with fur by showing him hideous images of animals struggling in traps, so the animal rights group is hoping to get his attention with a hideous image of … himself.

Coinciding with Paris Fashion Week, PETA will launch a new international ad campaign featuring the most unflattering picture of Galliano that the group could find with the slogan “Fur Is Worn by Beautiful Animals and Ugly People.” The ad will be unveiled outside of Galliano’s Dior fashion show on Tuesday, October 5.

“We scoured photo agencies for the picture that most accurately reflects Galliano’s selfish, cruel attitude toward animals, and although there were many candidates, this one summed it up best,” said PETA’s vice president of campaigns, Dan Mathews.

Galliano is a top PETA target because of his relentless use of fur. Many designers, including Calvin Klein, Betsey Johnson, Marc Bouwer, and Stella McCartney, refuse to use fur. PETA’s Galliano ad is the third in the “ugly” series that began last year with American Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who promotes fur and refuses to run even paid anti-fur ads. PETA unveiled a similar Donatella Versace “ugly” ad in Milan last fall.

PETA will tell Dior show attendees that for each fur coat or cuff, animals are trapped, drowned, or beaten to death in the wild or gassed, strangled, or electrocuted on fur farms. For more information, please visit FurIsDead.com.
